As Cortes de Coimbra 1385 (Court of Coimbra 1385) (1958-1961)

Fresco commissioned for the Sessions Room of the Palace of Justice. Part of a set of two panels depicting episodes of relevance in Portugal’s judiciary history. This panel celebrates the Court of Coimbra, convened to resolve the dynastic crisis of 1383-1385, that resulted in the acclamation of the Master of Avis as King João I of Portugal. This episode is depicted on the left two-thirds of the panel, and related in an inscription on the top left taken from the deed of election “Aos sseis dias do mes dabril da Era de 1423 (1385) Seendo Junttos na Çidade de coinbrra nos paaços del Rey pllalados cavaleiros ffidalgos e procuradores dos Conçelhos e comunidades das Çidades villas castellos E outro logares honrrados dos Reýgnos de portugal e do algarve todos acordados em húm amor preposito nomeamos escolhemos tomamos E Recebemos a dom Joham meestre davis por Reý e Senhor nosso e dos dictos Reýgnos / auto da eleição de D. João 1º”. The right-hand side section of the panel represents the Master of Avis’ victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota, against king Juan I of Castile, pretender to the throne of Portugal, as related in the inscription in the phylactery separating both sections: “E semdo a batalha cada vez maior e muy ferida dambolas partes / proube a deos que a bandeira de castela foy deribada e os castelaoõs de voltar atras / fernão lopes – crónica de Dom João 1º.” “Deffemssom dAintre Tejo e Odiana – Atolleiros / cerco de Lixboa – Algebarrota – Valverde – 1384 – 1385
