As Cortes de Leiria 1254 (Court of Leiria 1254) (1958-1961)

Fresco commissioned for the Sessions Room of the Palace of Justice. Part of a set of two panels depicting episodes of relevance in Portugal’s judiciary history. This panel celebrates the Court of Leiria, convened in 1254 by king Afonso III and widely regarded as the origin of parliamentarism in Portugal for having included, for the first time, representatives of the people alongside those of the clergy and the nobility. This episode is represented on the left two-thirds of the panel, bordered by a phylactery with the inscription “In era Mª CCLXXXX IIª Dominus Alfonsus Rex Portugaliae et comes Bolonie celebravit suam Curiam apus Leirenam mense Marcii cum Episcopis et cum progeribus et cum prelatis et cum ordimbus et cum bonis hommbus de concilus de suo Regno” taken from king Afonso III’s Book of Chancellary. The right-hand side section of the panel shows the royal entry into the city of Leiria, where the court was to take place.
